Off The Rails Contest
The video trailer of the project will be available soon!
Dear Teacher / Educator,
Welcome to the 2011-2012 school year and to the OFF THE RAILS nationwide rail-safety contest. The OFF THE RAILS multimedia contest is a project designed for students aged 11-14 and is brought to you by Operation Lifesaver Canada a not-for-profit public awareness program.
As you may know, youngsters do not typically assess risk well; as a result, they sometimes engage in unsafe activities. The OFF THE RAILS contest challenges youngsters to create a rail-safety message that is thought provoking and insightful in order to engage other kids across Canada.
Participants can either create a print or multi-media submission. There are 4 grand prizes and 8 secondary prizes totalling more than $10,000 to be awarded to winning students, classrooms, clubs, teams or schools. The prize money is to be used to promote literacy, numeracy, technology or physical and well-being of students.
As Teachers or Educators in schools, we are asking for your help in promoting this contest with your intermediate school Principals and students. The OFF THE RAILS contest can easily be integrated in various subject areas such as visual arts, technology and language arts. Below, you will find a list of curriculums available which help demonstrate links between the different provincial grade 7/8 curriculum and the OFF THE RAILS contest.
Every year in Canada approximately 300 collisions and trespassing incidents occur at highway/railway crossings and along railway tracks resulting in the death or serious injury of nearly 130 people. Virtually all of these incidents could be avoided. Operation Lifesaver is a unique public-private partnership that promotes awareness to help save lives and reduce suffering from injuries incurred at highway/railway crossings and from trespassing on railway property. Our mission is to prevent collisions between trains and motor vehicles and reduce rail incidents such as trespassing by educating Canadians about the hazards surrounding rail property and trains.
Your help in promoting this contest to this age group is greatly appreciated and can ultimately save lives.
